We live in a day where courage is dearly needed. Injustice and evil spread over this world like butter being spread over a piece of bread. If those with conviction do not stand up and fight this evil then that evil will one day win.
While there are many evils in this world, one evil right now that is taking prominence in our country is the injustice we are committing against immigrants.
Our country, who was built on the backs of those who were not born here, has now turned its back on those in need. This is why we must be like Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin and fight for migrant rights.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin founded the Lacey and Larkin Foundation after they received push back for standing up for Mexican immigrants.
While other media outlets were trying to paint “America’s Toughest Sheriff” as a hero who has drawn a line, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin used their media outlets to expose the racial bias of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
They revealed how he ordered his police officers to bend the law in order to illegally persecute those with Mexican heritage, that his office had a plethora of financial irregularities, that his Latino jails had inferior health conditions, and that he consistently used his power to silence those who opposed him. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin would be the beneficiaries of Arpaio’s wrath.
On October 18, 2007, Arpaio sent his Selective Enforcement Unit to remove Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin from their homes by force. After this illegal arrest, Sheriff Arpaio would then illegally detain them in two of his jails. However, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were not afraid. They knew standing up for immigrant rights would provoke wicked people and wicked responses.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin would go on to sue Maricopa County and win a settlement for a grand total of $3.75 million. It was from this settlement that the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund would be born. Their mission was to inspire others to speak out for immigration rights.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have dedicated all $3.75 million of their settlement as donations to be given to other non-profits who share similar dreams and views. Time will show the power of their cause.
